Using a new state law, the City has designated a Special Event Zone and a zero-tolerance policy for traffic infractions in anticipation of an unsanctioned truck meet on the beachside this weekend.
Warning signs have been installed, and enforcement in the Special Event Zone will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, June 10th. City Manager Kurt Swartzlander signed the designation Thursday morning, June 9th.
Got to love our city for doing this to protect our community and all those who enjoy our beautiful locale.

"Using a new state law, the City has designated a Special Event Zone and a zero-tolerance policy for traffic infractions in anticipation of an unsanctioned truck meet on the beachside this weekend.
Warning signs have been installed, and enforcement in the Special Event Zone will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, June 10th. City Manager Kurt Swartzlander signed the designation Thursday morning, June 9th.
The truck meet is formally moving to Homestead Miami Speedway in South Florida this weekend, but some participants have indicated they intend to revel in the Daytona Beach area instead. In the past, unsanctioned, unpermitted events of this type have clogged A1A and disrupted the Shores with loud music, air horns, black smoke, excessive litter, damage to the beach, and criminal issues including DUIs and lewd behavior.
Truck owners are welcome to visit our area, but they are expected to respect our community. Loud music and horns, traffic violations, and criminal behavior will not be tolerated. Fines will be doubled for noncriminal traffic infractions in the Special Event Zone, and vehicles will be towed and impounded for up to 72 hours.
Public Safety Director Stephan Dembinsky spoke Thursday at a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office press conference where Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced a Special Event Zone will be in place for the area bounded by A1A from Plaza Boulevard near Bellair Plaza in Daytona Beach south to Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores, including the beach, then west on Dunlawton to South Peninsula Drive, then north on South Peninsula Drive until it turns into North Halifax Avenue, north of Plaza Boulevard. The Special Event Zone established in the Shores’ declaration is the portion in the City of Daytona Beach Shores, concurrent with the larger area designated by Sheriff Chitwood.
Chief Dembinsky said 80% of Shores residents live along A1A, and past truck events have been disruptive and taxed public safety resources. The new state law, which was sponsored by State Rep. Tom Leek and State Sen. Tom Wright and supported by the city, helps law enforcement by allowing enhanced penalties for traffic violations and expanding the prohibition of loud music near private residences. This weekend’s truck meet is the first use of the new law.
The Special Event Zone will remain in effect as long as is reasonably necessary to ensure the public health, safety, and welfare but will not remain in effect after the unpermitted special event dissipates."
